Eyes: When puppets blink back

The line between a custom puppet and a living creature comes down to one thing: the eyes. Animatronic puppets add mechanical blinks, brows, and expressions to a handcrafted character, so it doesn't just move — it reacts. The result reads as alive on camera in a way pure foam and fleece can't quite reach.

Puppet designers engineer these mechanisms right into the build — servos for the eyes, cable-controlled eyelids, linkages for the brows, all hidden under the skin. From animatronic creature suits to characters with mechanical eyebrows, the engineering is what lets a puppet hold a close-up and truly emote.
